Long flights sound exciting when youโre booking them. Overnight to Europe. Window seat. Movies queued.
Then hour six hits.
Your legs feel stiff, the cabin lights are half-dimmed, the person in front of you reclines fully, and you start questioning every life choice that led you onto a plane for the next 12 hours.
After enough long-haul flights between Australia and Europe, Iโve realised comfort isnโt about one magic item โ itโs about a few small things that stop the flight from slowly draining your sanity.
Hereโs whatโs actually helped me stay comfortable on long flights, including a few things Iโve bought on the plane out of desperation and never fly without now.
Unless you can afford to fly business or first-class every flight. I am sure your comfortability will be sorted out itself. But if you are a first timer on track to fly across the world. Even the best airlines are working with tight space, dry air, and recycled oxygen. Expecting to be fully comfortable without any prep is setting yourself up for disappointment.
Once I stopped fighting this and started planning around it, long flights became way more manageable.
1 - Accept That Airline Comfort Is... Minimal
This is the single biggest upgrade I've made to long flights. Crying babies, engine noise, coughing, cabin announcements every 15 minutes - it all creates a distraction and nuisance after a while. Noise cancelling headphones create your own personal bubble where you can actually relax.
I invested my money into getting myself some Airpod 4 with active noise-cancellation. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Definitely.
Why they matter:
Reduce cabin fatigue
Make movies and podcasts enjoyable
Help you sleep even when the plane isn't quiet
Once you experience a long-haul flight with proper noise cancelling, there's no going back.
2 - Noise Cancelling Headphones Are Non-Negotiable
If you are not an Apple fan like I am, I would also suggest trying out the Sony or Bose Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones for a mid-range, yet affordable and performance headphone which I have used in the past, just found them to bulky to carry around on a 3-month trip.

Plane lighting never fully turns off, and even when it does, there is always the glare of someone's seat screen or device flickering on full brightness. A proper fitting eye mask that blocks out visual distractions and tells your brain it is time to rest, can make all the difference. The eye masks provided by the airline I feel do nothing for me expect make me more uncomfortable when the mask touches your eyelids and it does not achieve full darkness without a nice foam frame around your eyeline. That is why I would recommend these proper blackout eye/sleep masks that will make you feel so much more comfortable on your long haul flights or over night train travels.
3 - Eye Mask + Neck Support = Real Sleep (Almost)
Neck pillows are more of a personal manner - some people hate them, some people swear by them. My opinion is that I used to think they are pointless, take up extra space and actually make you more uncomfortable. But, after doing the research and finding more appropriate ones that actually support your head instead of pushing it forward, can make the difference of waking up with a sore neck or waking up semi-human can make you feel a lot better. Honestly nothing is better than sleeping in your own bed at home, but when you are forced to sleep upright in a chair, having certain pillows and other forms of comfort, can make your sense of relaxation, easier to achieve.

I never really played a thought into how these socks can play a part in keeping your body stable while being in the air for so long, under immense pressure. Even though I did not have major leg swelling once I landed in London. They still swell up and my mate who I travelled with had the swelling for 3 continuous days after we landed, just to add to the extra everyday stress of being away from home and in another country.
Compression socks help with circulation, reduce the heavy-leg feeling, and make it easier to walk normally once you land. Some people will have better effects with them then others but for the price you pay. They may not be glamourous, But they can be very effective.

Apart from all the products listed above, I want to also share some tips and other smaller items I kept in the seat with me to make the journey more bearable. Having a lip balm and moisturiser can be great to keeping your skin hydrated and refreshed the whole flight as the cabin air can be very dry and have a sensitive effect on your skin and makes you feel cleaner throughout the flight especially when there is no access to a shower on board or even washing your face.
So, I always carry a few small comfort items with me:
Lip balm
Hand cream or face moisturiser
Deodorant roller
Staying hydrated matters just as much, even when it means more trips to the bathroom. Dehydration makes everything worse โ headaches, fatigue, dry eyes, stiff muscles. I bring an empty bottle through security, refill it once Iโm airside, and sip consistently instead of relying on cabin service. Avoiding alcohol until landing also helps more than I like to admit but if you're going on holiday, don't be that strict on yourself but it does make a difference.
Having an entertainment backup plan is also a good idea incase your seat-back screen fails or power ports do not work. So having a book, deck of cards or downloaded movies/shows can keep you occupied to not make the flight feel like an eternity.
None of these things are life-changing on their own. But together, they turn a long flight from something you endure into something you can actually manage. The goal isnโt luxury โ itโs arriving without feeling completely wrecked.
5 - Small In-Flight Comforts That Make a Big Difference

Long flights are part of the journey, especially when travelling to Europe. You canโt shorten them, but you can make them far more comfortable with a bit of preparation and a few well-chosen items.
Everything I use now has been tested the hard way โ mid-flight, tired, uncomfortable, and wishing Iโd planned better. If youโre heading on a long-haul flight soon, your future self will thank you for taking comfort seriously. It is not that much extra on top of the money you will be spending for your entire trip anyway, so make it worth it!
